Year 5 had a fantastic afternoon visiting Wednesfield Academy. First, we settled into the DT classroom – which was an experience in itself! The room was filled with new equipment and machinery. The lesson started with a health and safety task, which they completed in groups.
Next, we were introduced to a laser cutter (CAM) and watched the pieces of acrylic plastic being engraved by the cutter. Then, Mrs Davenport explained that we would be making keyrings this afternoon. We started by learning how to use a flat file to smooth the edges of the keyring. We had to do this carefully so that the four edges were symmetrical.
With support, we were then shown how to use a pillar drill to make a hole. This part was tricky as the plastic was quite brittle so it could snap easily. We had to lower the drill extremely slowly and hold the vice in place.
Finally, we were given aluminium to use as a file – this was a good way to test different materials see why a flat file was a much more effective tool to use.
Super effort all!
