In Year 3, the children worked in small groups to carry out a child-led scientific investigation about light reflection. They were challenged to find the best material to design a reflective book bag that would help them stay safe on their way to and from school.
The pupils decided on their own methods, testing a range of everyday materials such as foil, mirror, black card, and metal by shining torches and observing which surfaces reflected light most effectively. As an added extra challenge, the children were given some ‘decoy’ scientific equipment, where they had to justify why they wouldn’t need a newton meter or measuring jug for this particular experiment.
The children recorded their observations carefully, discussed their findings with one another, and compared results across groups. The activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, while also helping the children understand how science can be applied to real-life situations. Fantastic work!
