Reading
Reading is a priority at Edward the Elder Primary School. It is vital that all children develop expertise in reading so that they can access the wider curriculum and connect with the world around them. Phonics, word recognition and language comprehension are explicitly taught through a rich and varied reading programme of texts which build up from fully decodable to highly decodable books to a wide range of high quality texts. Books are structured and levelled set of books written specifically to ensure that every child can take steady and progressive steps towards reading success. Our timetable offers a rich reading provision, including time for individual reading, group reading and class reading as well as reading for pleasure. In addition, we encourage children to read at home frequently, and provide a diary for home/school communication.

I love reading at home and the summer reading challenge at my library because it makes me smart. My favourite book is 'Are We There Yet?' Mihalis Year 2

Author Visits
Lucy Noguera

We received an online workshop from author Lucy Noguera who has written Herman Needs a Home and Swop. Both books reflect on real situations such as plastic pollution and BSL. The children also have the opportunity to buy signed books from Lucy to enjoy her fabulous work.
Sarah Surgey

We were delighted to welcome author Sarah Surgey, who shared her new book Greener Grass with us. During her visit, she gave us a fascinating insight into the life of an author.
Clint Evans

Clint Evans shared his wonderful book ‘The Cloud Who Was Afraid Of Heights' with Year 1. He also introduced us to his brand new book ‘The Lonely Cloud’. The children were full of questions and excitement…maybe we have some budding authors!
Reading Scrapbook
At Edward the Elder School, we love reading!
Children have the opportunity to take home a class reading scrapbook, a wonderful way for them to share their passion for books. In their scrapbook, they can record favourite stories, characters, and special reading experiences before bringing it back to school to share with the class.
Use the arrow to scroll through some of our amazing scrapbook entries and celebrate our love of reading together!

Shining Star

At our school, every child has the opportunity to be a Shining Star! Children can earn this special recognition for many reasons, including super learning, brilliant behaviour, being a kind and supportive friend—and so much more.
When a child is chosen as a Shining Star, they receive a wonderful reward: they get to choose a book of their own. This not only celebrates their achievements but also encourages a love of reading.
We are incredibly proud of all our Shining Stars and love celebrating their successes. We look forward to presenting many more books to children across the school in the coming weeks and months!

Our Little Lending
Library
We are very lucky at Edward the Elder to have links with the wonderful Wednesfield Rotary Club. They have kindly donated two beautiful lending libraries for our playgrounds!
Book Fair
At our school, we are passionate about developing a lifelong love of reading, and hosting a book fair is one of the exciting ways we support this aim.
The book fair brings a wide range of books directly into school, giving children and their adults the opportunity to browse, explore, and discover stories that spark their interest.
