Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the new academic year at Edward the Elder – your child’s final year! Year 6 will bring new challenges as we begin our SATs year but with everyone’s support, we know your child can succeed! We hope that you had an enjoyable summer!

Supporting us in Year 6 this year will be Teaching Assistant Miss Forrester. During the morning, the class may be split into smaller groups and taught by either Miss Louca or Mrs Guest - these groups are likely to change on a daily basis. These lessons will mainly be the core subjects, focusing on SATs. During the afternoons, the class are likely to be taught as a whole by Miss Louca and these will cover more of the foundation subjects.

To provide you with as much information as possible, attached is a copy of your child’s timetable. This gives a brief outline of your child’s day but should be viewed as a guide only as it is subject to change!

Purple creative homework books will continue for the autumn term and we aim for it to allow our children to both consolidate their learning from class as well as move their learning on. This homework book will be coming home with your child at the end of this week – please look out for this! The insert to the book will provide further information about this. It is vital that all children complete their homework. Year 6 aims to begin to prepare children for secondary school and we hope you can support us with this.

Children will continue to receive reading books linked to their ability from school which can be changed once completed, we expect books to be changed weekly; please support us with writing in your child’s reading diary. Children will have access to reading journals should they wish to complete them but these will not be compulsory – these could be included during purple homework though.

In year 6 we will dive straight into the teaching of SPaG – this will replace our phonics teaching time. Children will receive 10 age related spellings on a Wednesday to be tested the following Wednesday. Please encourage your child to practise these at home as it is a fundamental part of their learning and will support them with the spelling part of the SPaG test.

PE will take place on a Monday and Tuesday, please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school. White round neck t-shirt, shorts (black or navy) and black pumps. PE in year 6 will be taught by Mrs Harper, these lessons will cover a range of skills. It would also be appreciated if all uniform (including PE kit and pumps) is labelled with your child’s full name and class. Please can we remind parents that jewellery should not be worn in school with the exception of stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines these should not be worn on PE days. Children will be asked to remove earrings before PE sessions. If earrings cannot be removed, please provide plasters or something similar from home in order to cover them. Long hair should also be tied back.

We have some fantastic topics planned for Year 6 this year and this term our learning will be based around the Inventions and Developments, Humans and Animals and Pharaoh Queen. The first unit focuses on the creative process of invention and design, with a learning towards history and design technology. Children will have the opportunity to actively engage in the design and making process. This topic is called: ‘A World of Bright Ideas’.  Later on in the term we will explore the unit ‘Go with the flow’ where the children will explore and apply a range of science skills as they navigate their learning around the human body. Finally, their learning will be taken to a history-focused unit which tells the inspirational story of Hatshepsut. We will explore 4 competencies, courage, commitment, creativity and community whilst learning about Ancient Egypt History.

The main gate continues to open at 8.45am and we urge children to be in school at this time in order to begin their learning straight away, having time for their morning activity. Children should be collected from our external classroom door at 3.15pm. If you wish for your child to walk home alone, please complete the attached letter and return to school as soon as possible. We cannot allow children to walk home alone or with a different adult without verbal or written consent from you as their parent.

A reminder that if your child is asthmatic, please ensure an in-date inhaler and spacer is in school at all times. Please ensure you have informed the office with any updated medical information.

We will be holding a parent meeting this term to discuss SATs and our residential to Laches Wood. For your information, SATs will take place W/B 13th May 2024 and our residential will take place 5th-7th June 2024. Further information to follow.

We look forward to working with you over the next year to ensure your children have a valuable year. Year 6 is a very important year, and we look forward to one which is full of learning and progress. If you have any questions/queries now or throughout the year, please do not hesitate to speak to us, either after school or by making an appointment via the school office.

Thank you in advance for your continued support,
